Introducing The Ehya Group
The Ehya Group, composed of two non-governmental, nonprofit, and public-benefit institutions of Tavanyab and Ehya-e-Arzeshha, was established in 1999, after obtaining official licenses. Since its establishment, this popular institution has been seriously working to reduce social harm through raising awareness, providing counseling and social work services, supporting HIV/AIDS patients, empowering and creating self-relying spirit in physically and mentally disabled children, attracting the participation of authorities, and sensitizing and highlighting the role of various social elements in the normalization and improvement of methods.
Vision of Ehya Group
A non-governmental, active, dynamic, influential, independent and popular group, with national and regional development in the field of empowerment
Mission of Ehya Group
As a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), and relying on benevolent and humanitarian incentives, as well as taking advantage from social capital, specialized directors, staff and volunteers, the Ehya group acts within the framework of the following multidimensional missions in order to achieve its designated perspectives:
- The supportive aspect: supports for rehabilitation and empowerment of clients and socially-injured individuals with the aim of self-reliance and optimization of conditions, facilities and welfare services
- Educational and informational aspect: education or trainings at different social, familial and individual levels to change the negative attitude towards the people covered [by this group], paving the way for participation [of these people], [their] self-confidence and elimination of existing discrimination [against them], including customary and legal discriminations and those associated with civil rights, life skills training, as well as training and empowering professional staff in related areas.

Preventive activities of the group
With over 18 years of worthwhile experience, the Ehya Group is honored to welcome volunteers and goodwill actors of the society (with any expertise and experience) to help provide the best possible social rehabilitation services to those in need. Believing that we should think big, act small … and we can start now, the Ehya group managed to direct the public potential as a genuine NGO (non-governmental, nonprofit, and public-benefit), and organized it in line with the interests of society.
Implementation of various plans by Ehya Group since its establishment

- Reading books for children admitted to hospital under the title of book backpack in the hospitals of Firoozgar, Shafa Yahyaiean, Bahrami, Children’s Medical Center, etc. in Tehran in coordination with the hospital authorities in a way that volunteers attended the above-mentioned hospitals at certain times and provided happy hours for children through reading books and poems, playing music, and lending books to those children admitted to hospitals for a long time.
- Holding a workshop entitled “Conflicts solving training and constructive methods for establishing interpersonal communication and stress coping strategies”.
- Providing supports for 1,200 Afghan and Iraqi refugee families, as well as Afghan and Iraqi unmarried women in critical condition, with the participation of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
- Holding a symposium for girls at risk of harm
As the growing social harm has raised the sense of accountability of goodwill compatriots all over the country, the Ehya Group has been providing social work and counseling services, as well as timely inhibition and correction of serious social abnormalities. In line with this, the Ehya Group has been focusing on the revitalization of values in support of and assistance to socially-injured people, especially the AIDS orphans and their mothers; because the AIDS phenomenon is one of the most important challenges of the third millennium.
Setting up a telephone counseling line
The Ehya Group considers the principle that the lack of family foundations, the increasing number of family disputes, suicide, divorce and other family and social harms, are among the causes that should be considered comprehensively and scrupulously in order to be identified. Considering the importance of focusing on the concept of family, and preventing and reducing the social harm, a Hotline with call numbers of 021-66935524 and 021-66901010 and 021-53865, and a capacity of 5 lines, was launched for the purpose of the timely intervention in social harm in 2002, in order to help restore moral and human values. Advisers who work on the Hotline of Ehya Group have always the role of facilitators, not the final decision-makers, and provide free of charge counseling services in the areas of marriage, divorce, domestic violence, dependence, family problems, communication problems, high-risk behaviors, AIDS, escaping from home, depression and life skills, etc., while respecting the principle of secrecy. Since the establishment, more than 65000 individuals (In villages and cities of Iran and even out of the country) have benefited from this free hotline services.
Due to the expansion of the range of social harm and in order to facilitate the access of our compatriots, especially vulnerable people to counseling services and social work, as well as the need of disabled children in cities, we decided to establish centers similar to the Ehya Group in other cities of the country. In this regard, with the help of God and assistance of the volunteers and benefactors of various cities of Iran, we have managed to establish and set up centers based on the pattern of the Ehya Group in the following cities:

Information, Education, and Training Workshops
Ehya group believes that prevention is prioritized to treatment. Implementing preventive cultural programs based on the belief of “Prevention and notification are prioritized to treatment” is one of the ways to reduce social harm. The root of much social harm is ignorance. Many people are unaware of the conditions that create or facilitate harm, mainly due to lack of information and failure in notification. Therefore, the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) such as Ehya Group [full title in Farsi, “Ehyay-e-Arzeshha” meaning Restoring the values”] is highlighted here.
In this regard, the Ehya Group has undertaken following activities:
1- Holding AIDS awareness workshop
Given the widespread range of social harm, and on the eve of entering the fourth round of HIV/AIDS, and in order to prevent and control the growing trend of AIDS, The Ehya Group decided to organize AIDS workshops in line with long-term goals as well as the community’s need for education, in particular AIDS, and take effective steps to prevent and control AIDS with the help of its professional staff (sociologist, physician, psychologist, worker, etc.) using the public information techniques.
A brief outline of workshops that have been held by the Ehya Group:
- In automotive industry, including: Saipadizel, Megamotour, Iran–Khodro, Pars–Khodro, etc.
- In universities including Faculty of Dentistry and School of Nursing-Midwifery of the University of Tehran, Faculty of Social Sciences of Alzahra University, Allameh Tabataba’i University, etc.)
- In National Petroleum Organization and in Laleh Hospital (for the specialized dental team, physicians and nurses and a group of experts working in the health centers)
- In Science Promotion Association, for a group of scholars and elites of the society on the occasion of the “Day of Health and Life”
- In Nejat-Fallah Hall of Alborz Province, for a group of directors of municipality, city council, IRI Medical Council, etc.
- In District 11 of Tehran Municipality, for managers and experts, with the presence of the mayor, city council, Medical Council Organization, charities and residents of the neighborhoods council
- In Imam Ali Officers’ Academy, for groups of soldiers and officers
- In Scientific Committee of the 7th Dentistry Congress of Armed Forces held at the IRIB International Conference Center on AIDS for a number of dentists (several times) and the Iranian General Dentists Association
- In IRIB International Conference Center for Armed Forces
- In Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation in Mashhad on AIDS
- In Bus Terminals of Tehran
- In Islamic Propagation Organization
2- Setting up of the AIDS notification booths and distribution of brochures
- Setting up of an AIDS notification booth in Laleh Park, Factories, etc.
- Setting up of an AIDS notification booth in Khaney-e-Salamat (Health house) in the neighborhood of Tarasht and distribution of brochures of the Ehya Group
- Distribution of brochures in the information booth
- Preparation and distribution of a teaser to advertise the Ehya-line at Tehran metro stations
- Distribution of fliers (pamphlets) inside the Peik-e-Bartar magazines in four regions of Tehran (North, south, east and west)
3- Training of peer educators
The sessions of group-therapy, focusing on active participation of health supporter mothers (women who have lost their spouses due to AIDS and have AIDS-orphaned children), are held with the presence of specialists; because learning is becoming more stable when all senses are active. With this in mind, after completing the necessary trainings, the health supporter mothers start their activities as peer educators and serve as the information ambassadors for the prevention of AIDS. Obviously, a person who has experienced social harm himself/herself such as living with HIV/AIDS and received training in this area can communicate with people like herself/himself, much easier.
4- Holding the Training of Teachers (TOT) Workshop
In order to prevent and cope with social harm, in particular AIDS, the Eyha Group conducts a number of TOT training workshops on the topic of HIV/AIDS, AIDS prevention, in the meeting hall of Ehya Group, where the university students, managers, experts, advisers and social workers active in various governmental and nongovernmental organizations, including NGOs, municipalities, universities, hospitals, etc. are attended.
In these workshops, educational and scientific materials are presented to the guests on the psychological, social, and medical consequences of AIDS, how it is transmitted, and the ways to prevent and control AIDS.
After getting required training and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills, AIDS brochures will be delivered to the participants to enable them to set up information and counseling stands or booths at their place of education or employment, and act as the ambassadors of the Ehya Group by distributing brochures among students, staff, workers, etc. and raise awareness of people on AIDS.
5. Setting up the VCT Center
In order to prevent and control social harm, in particular HIV/AIDS, and access to vulnerable individuals who are in need of counseling, psychological treatment, social work and mental supports, the Ehya Group launched VCT centers (Centers for providing Volunteer Counseling Training services and doing HIV tests ) and AIDS Information Base.
People who are willing to perform Rapid Test (HIV rapid diagnosis) and receive AIDS counseling services are referred to these VCT centers, where the experienced and professional staff at the Ehya Group answer all questions of clients (face to face and confidential), while doing the test and taking into account the principles of professional counseling and privacy.
6- Setting up a Mobile AIDS Information Base
Today, the global crisis of HIV/AIDS threatens our nation, just like the rest of the world, so that with a very young population, our nation has faced with an ever increasing prevalence of addiction, especially its injection-sexual type on the one hand, and the current situation is such that notification in this field requires much more extensive work than has been done so far, on the other hand. Therefore, the awareness of people, especially young people, about infectious diseases transmitted through infected syringes or unprotected sex is one of the most basic needs of our society.
In pursuit of the above objectives, the Society for the Protection and Assistance of Socially Disadvantaged Individuals (SPASDI), as a non-governmental, non-profit, public-benefit organization, has equipped a caravan car, named a mobile clinic, with informational facilities (audiovisual information, etc.), to provide counselling services, rapid test, and rehabilitation equipment in order to provide spatial mobility in the event of unexpected accidents and the possibility of providing urgent clinical and educational training for the prevention of social harm, especially about HIV infection and AIDS in high-risk areas and in various cities, especially in the townships of Tehran.
Thanks to the God, and with the help of some governmental agencies, including Ministry of Health, Police, and Traffic Police, we obtained the permit for launching a mobile base in 2015. Since the launch of the mobile base, with the establishment of the mobile base in the public places, especially the city’s squares and parks, more than 910 cases of counselling services and testing have been carried out. The benefits of this plan are timely identification of people with AIDS and introducing them to behavioral disease centers in order to begin the rapid treatment. By implementing this project, we can take an important step in implementing the global program of 909090 in our country.
Ninety percent of those living in the world with HIV will be aware of their infection by 2020. Ninety percent of those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are also expected to receive "ongoing antiviral treatment". It is also expected that 90% of recipients of ongoing antiviral treatment are reduced.
7- General Information in:
7-1. Laleh Park

7-2. Mellat Park
Every year on May 7, with the assistance of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education and the Municipality of Tehran, the Ehya Group celebrates the International Day for the Protection of AIDS-Orphaned Children, with the presence of a number of people, along with these children, who are covered by the Ehya Group. In this regard, one of the best places to celebrate the Orphan’s Day is the public places, and therefore, this ceremony was recently held in the Mellat Park and more than 500 people attended this ceremony to announce their unity and solidarity in eliminating discrimination against people living with AIDS, especially orphans, while becoming familiar with HIV/AIDS (Symptoms, transmission ways, prevention methods, etc.).
One of the main pillars of this training program is providing necessary training through Naqqali and Parde Khani that allow the general public to be familiar with AIDS.
- Naqqāli is an Iranian traditional theatre form, having originated in ancient Iran. This dramatic performance concerns telling of a story, history or non-history based, in a variety of genres. It is done either in verse or prose and accompanied by gestures and movements appropriate to the event related.
- Parde Khani is a kind of Naqqali in which a curtain is also used to show the related images.
7-3. Milad Tower
On the occasion of World AIDS Day, the Ehya group held a one-day workshop of “mother, child, and HIV” in the main hall of the Milad Tower:
“Mother, Child and HIV” workshop was held in Roodaki Hall of Milad Tower (In the last November) with three panels of Mother and HIV, Child and HIV, and Media and HIV, attended by lecturers from the Directorate of AIDS, Ministry of Health, Deputy Minister of Education, Office of the Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs, NGO managers, social activists and people affected by HIV/AIDS.
The conference was attended by 250 invited people from the group of journalists, experts and managers of governmental and non-governmental organizations, etc. Meanwhile this program was broadcasted through TV channels, newspapers and magazines. The purpose of arranging this ceremony was sensitizing, raising awareness about AIDS, supporting patients suffering from AID and making efforts to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people affected by AIDS.
7-4. Holding an AIDS Pathology Specialty Workshop (November 2017), attended by journalists
Since the media play an important role in awareness-raising and informing the general public, the Ehya Group is celebrating the International AIDS Day each year, organizing specialized AIDS sessions attended by the media representatives, journalists, faculty members, and academics. In these friendly meetings, there are clear questions and answers to examine the harm caused by AIDS, through specialized discussions about AIDS. By providing expert analyzes, the experts present at the Workshop provide their native and applied techniques.
Since AIDS has become a major tsunami and is aimed at harnessing human societies, especially young people and women, so that it is one of the today’s major death-threatening factors, a firm determination is needed to resolve and control this great danger. The result of scientific studies suggests that changing the attitude in social life (especially in the younger generation) is necessary to harness this crisis. The development of indicators for healthy living and the acceptance of family and community responsibilities and increasing life expectancy are the fundamental pillars of this change of attitude. The workshop was attended by journalists from the Shargh newspaper, IRNA and ISNA news agencies, etc.
8. Lecture of Khosro Mansourian, founder of the Eyha Group
In a meeting with the Assembly of Qom Seminary Scholars and Researchers, Mr. Khosro Mansourian participated in the 15th public meeting of the scholars of the seminary and professors of Mofid University on the 30th Nov. 2017, while referring to the history of social harm, especially AIDS, in the Iranian community, and called for serious attention of the community’s elites, especially the clergymen, to the social anomalies.
Khosro Mansourian said that awareness of the society on AIDS has led to elimination of discrimination, and stressed that the empowerment of socially injured people could bring about a better future for our country. Khosro Mansourian considered the role of the elite, university professors, and clerics very important in awareness-raising because of their communication with the community in the cities and villages, and urged them to take necessary steps to normalize themselves in the face of AIDS and hepatitis.
He announced that the social consequences of AIDS are more harmful than the disease itself, as they increase the geometric progression of AIDS to others. Finally, referring to the telephone counseling services of the Ehya Group (Association) provided through a hotline, he said that this service is a way for suicide prevention, providing necessary guidance on life skills, divorce, AIDS, hepatitis, and high-risk behaviors by senior experts in psychology and social work, while observing the professional principles.
9. Production of a film “Behind the Wall of Silence”
A film has been produced by Massoud Jafari Jozani, a well-known Iranian director, in which his daughter and the co-writer of the play (Sahar) has played the main role. This film which addresses the issue of AIDS after a long time in our cinema and seeks to illustrate the different angles of the ADIS was released at the Fajr Film Festival.
This is a women-centered film about AIDS, the elimination of discrimination against people suffering from AIDS, and the problems these people face with in their everyday lives. In addition, the film is an attempt to promote and encourage people to do public-benefit and charitable works.
10- The Ehya Group and Media
In order to prevent and control HIV/AIDS as well as to promote culture in support of HIV/AIDS patients, the Ehya group has taken important, effective and worthwhile steps in removing discrimination against these people, supported by the media. Therefore, while publishing educational brochures on AIDS and distributing them among the general public and doing interviews with various media and publishing them on sites and journals, and various newspapers, this group has been providing information and raising the awareness on HIV/AIDS.
Among these, following measures can be mentioned:
- Publication of adverts and scientific articles in the daily newspapers and magazines, comprised of 55 articles in 2016 and 33 articles in 2017
- Publication of the Eyha Magazine containing the most up-to-date scientific articles on AIDS, 21 issues of which have been published so far
- Providing the opportunity of the presence of health sponsor mothers (Women heads of households suffering from AIDS) in television programs
- Building more than 15 television programs during 2017 and providing a video report of the activities and services of the Institute
11. Gallery of the Ashianey-e-Mehr (The Nest of Kindness)
The Ashiyaney-e-Mehr Gallery was established in 2009 with the official permission of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, with the goal of creating a bridge between art, artists and charity, and bringing the voices of vulnerable women and children affected by social harm to all segments of society and preventing the growing trend of social harm and sympathy of the pioneering artists such as Parviz Kalantari, Hossein Khosrojerdi, Mohammad Ali Taraghi Jah etc. who have always been pioneers in the charitable affairs.
So far, 50 exhibitions and workshops have been held, exhibiting the fine works of artists, and significant achievements have been achieved, such as creating artistic training classes for physically and mentally disabled people, attracting expert humanitarian workers, making familiar with authentic galleries, providing part of the costs of the Ehya Group, making familiar with ministries, big organizations, reputable artistic media and actors, as well as artists and professors of art and cinema. We hope that we can take more effective steps, through Ashiyaney-e-Mehr, about creating a balanced culture and a socially healthy society.

Designing and offering Greetings Cards
Due to the expanding range of social harm, we decided to expand the scope of rehabilitation, information and awareness-raising, counseling, and social work services to reduce the suffering of disabled people in the society. Since the aforementioned services are provided free of charge to the customers, it imposes a considerable burden on the Association (Ehya Group), and given the fact that all current expenses of the Association are provided by the good people of our country, we have been preparing and presenting greetings cards (celebrating the special events and celebrations) designed based on the images of the works donated by the artists to the Gallery and desktop yearbooks to cover the above mentioned costs; so that the proceeds from the works will be directed towards the protection of disabled children and orphans from AIDS. Meanwhile, emotional communication between people and charitable affairs is established.
Under The Blue Dome
On the occasion of the International Day of Disabled Persons, the Association of Iranian Sculptor Artists held the special program of the “Under the Blue Dome” with the participation and cooperation of the Iranian Artists’ House, the Ehya and Tavanyab Associations, Network for Assisting the Work and Street Children, and a group of theater artists on the 23rd Nov. and 1st Dec. 2017 in the Bahar and Nami galleries of the Artist’s House.
On the 23rd of Nov. 2017, disabled children, covered by the Ehya Group (Association), attended these two galleries accompanied by their mothers and a number of volunteers and staff of Tavanyab Association.
After a collaborative game, a theater group read a play for children, and then the children were asked to paint the story using their imagination, and give them volume using the simple materials and tools. Then, their craftwork was exhibited at the same booths on 1st Dec. 2017. In addition to the exhibition, there were booths available for the Ehya and Tavanyab Associations to enable them to introduce the activities of these two associations through distributing brochures to the visitors to the Artists’ House.
On 10th Dec. when the program was closed, one of the prominent sculptor artists in our country created a portrait of one of the disabled children and presented it to him/her.
The purpose of the children’s presence in the special program of “Under the Blue Dome” was:
- Creating a happy time for children
- Providing an opportunity for the presence of disabled people in the society
- Familiarizing children with art and artists
- Drawing the attention of disabled people, their families and the different strata of the society toward the abilities of these people instead of their disabilities
Holding the Exhibition of “On the Manifestation of Love”
In order to relate the artists and the art community with beneficence and charitable affairs, an exhibition called “The Manifestation of Love” was held exhibiting the works of art by some of our prominent artists such as Seyyed Mohammad Ehsaei, Nasrollah Afjehei, Farahnaz Osouli, Iraj Eskandari, Javad Bakhtiari, Ali Tan, Behzad Bozorgi, Reza Bangiz, and Ali Taraghi Jah, etc. from 5th Jan. 2018 to 18th Jan. 2018 in the Ashiyaney-e-Mehr Gallery.
Through donating a large number of artworks of the artists of our country in favor of disabled children and orphans of AIDS, in the Ashiyaney-e-Mehr Gallery, they came along with us in the direction of prevention and control of social harm.
Supporting the Clients
- In support of the family unit, the Ehya Group has taken following measures:
1- Empowering women and capacity building of them, especially the health supporter women (Head of household women who lives with HIV/AIDS)
2. Organizing group therapy sessions on the basis of the active participation of health supporter mothers, with the participation of specialists. With this in mind, after completing the necessary trainings, the health supporter mothers start their activities as peer educators and serve as the information ambassadors for the prevention of AIDS. Obviously, a person who has experienced social harm himself/herself such as living with HIV/AIDS and received training in this area can communicate with people like her/himself, much easier.
- Holding workshops for capacity building and empowerment of health supporter mothers and mothers of hope:
To improve the level of awareness, increase self-esteem and empower the covered families to overcome their own problems, the Ehya group has been conducting weekly and continuous classes for empowering health supporter mothers (Those who live with HIV/AIDS and have child or children with AIDS), and mothers of hope (those who have children with physical disabilities).
In line with this, there are classes on topics such as health education, nutrition, psychology, children education, group therapy, self-awareness skills, emotional management and stress management skills, communication skills, life skills training, etc.
- Employment of the Health Advocate Mothers (HAM) and Mothers of Hope:
A tailoring workshop was launched with the presence of Mothers of Hope (those who have disabled children) and Health Advocate Mothers (HAM), who have lost their husbands due to AIDS and owns an orphaned child suffering from AIDS).
The Ehya Group believes that fishing should be taught to the clients instead of giving them the fish. Based on this belief, after providing physical facilities, spatializing of the location, and procuring the equipment necessary for the sewing workshop, this workshop was launched with the help of sewing instructors who volunteered to provide tailoring training for mothers of disabled children and the mothers with AIDS orphans. Upon completion of training courses and acquisition of skills, the Ehya Group donated two sewing machines to the mothers to enable them to create jobs for themselves and achieve self-sufficiency and financial independence.
SPASDI has supported 175 head-of-household women suffering from HIV/AIDS from all over Iran and has tried to empower them mentally, socially and economically. Empowerment is considered to be a process during which women become aware of their needs and rights, gain the courage to achieve their goals, and become capable of actualizing their demands.
What distinguishes head-of-household women living with HIV/AIDS, as a vulnerable stratum of the society are the social, cultural and financial difficulties and obstacles they face. This not only challenges them with poverty, but also deprives from social opportunities and freedom of choice, and causes lack of self-confidence.
HIV/AIDS, besides its medical and medicinal concerns, has behavioral and social aftermaths and is known to be a social disability. Social disabilities, if denied or exaggerated, can spread in a subtle way. In order to decrease potential harms to this group of people, being in touch with individuals who have successfully adapted to similar problems is useful and even necessary for physical and mental rehabilitation.
A sense of belonging to a “Peer Group” reminds one that she is not alone and that there are others who have successfully adapted to the same situation. There is an obvious need, at times graver than professional therapy, to communicate with people the individual feels close and sympathizes with. The important point is not merely participating in a peer group, but participating in a purposefully structured peer group. One that is associated with a therapeutic effect.
Another tool for emotional empowerment is holding group therapy and training classes for HAM i.e. weekly 4-hour classes and sessions with various topics such as life skills, parenting skills, coping with fear and anxiety.
There is good news that 5 provinces have created organizations based on SPASDI’s model for preventing and educating on HIV/AIDS and 4 provinces are creating organizations based on this model and also we are trying to establish some branches according to SPASDI’s model in regional countries.
Group Therapy Sessions
The most important factor in the formation of group therapy sessions is the determination of purposes and objectives of the group. The formation of a coherent and well-liked group requires not only professional support, but also supportive and affectionate relationship between the participants.
In the first step, it is necessary to conduct diagnostic interviews with each volunteer before their participation in group therapy sessions. The individual might participate in such sessions with negative feelings such as guilt, fear, despair and even suicide. Gradually, however, she will find answers through individual counseling, becoming exposed to peers and tackling realities of the disease. A sense of belonging to a group is closely linked with “feeling secure”. Those who have participated in the sessions and achieved a feeling of safety and empowerment introduce others to SPASDI. This way, HAM take measures to help their peers. Relying on the acquired abilities, patients learn to continue their lives, find a job, marry properly, even have healthy children, and perhaps voluntarily become information ambassadors, raising awareness about prevention of HIV/AIDS and fighting stigmatization and discrimination against other women living with HIV/AIDS.
Social empowerment is another concern of SPASDI. For example, after the active participation in weekly classes, HAM become capable of contributing to programs held for informing about AIDS in various centers such as universities, companies, schools, terminals and other related centers to talk about their successful experiences and difficulties.
One of the others SPASDI’s activities to make HAM socially empowered is equipping a wobble clinic with a group of specialized and educated staff and HAMs to inform them of HIV, preventing them from it, teaching about it and when necessary taking them voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) which are done confidentially and freely specially for marginalized excommunicated groups .These sessions not only inform the society about HIV/AIDS, but also creates a sense of relief in individual since she does not need to hide her disease any longer. When a patient fears that others’ knowledge of her disease changes the way they treat her, she will try to hide the disease. HIV/AIDS can be controlled better when patients are accepted by the society and people do not view those infected as criminals.
In addition to emotional and social empowerment, job training as a mean for economic empowerment and financial independence is another goal of SPASDI pursuits. We focus on job training and economic empowerment because we believe that the low position of women in Iran is not because of their solidarity or any other intrinsic weakness but we believe that this low position is the result of the negative look of the society to them.
SPASDI has held training courses for sewing, knitting, bakery, stain on glass, gardening and other practical skills aimed at employment of its members. Since many members of the HAM need to raise young children, finding a job that can be done from home and commensurate with their abilities and interests is a great achievement. Unfortunately because usually HAM(s) are hopeless and disappointed from continuing their normal lives, some of them do not attend these classes seriously and even quite them in the middle.
Other than the positive effects of financial independence, participants of training courses speak of a feeling of belonging, which was attained by accompanying other trainees and making new friends. Social relationships and supportive friendships not only help with learning, but also train other skills such as patience, planning, goal setting and emotional and error management.
Furthermore, by holding various training courses, SPASDI provides the required conditions for employment in the society and supplies necessary equipment (such as industrial sewing and weaving machines) for the HAM. Also with emphasis on skill learning and employment, SPASDI pays monthly pensions to its clients. Monthly pension payments to the HAM are funded by people’s generous donations. When required, various loans and financial aid are also given to our clients by a group approval of our social workers and managers.
I am a socially empowered woman. I am Mahvash, 43 years old. I have 3 kids and it has been 5 years that I am a member of the support group of health mother health (HIV +) of the Ehya NGO. My husband was arrested and detained for drug trafficking. After release, he got a very difficult disease which after hospitalization we found that it is AIDS. Then by the order of behavioral counseling center I together with my 3 children went for HIV testing. Fortunately my 3 children were healthy, but I was affected due to a lack of awareness. I remember that at that time I was not in a good mental state. I was in severe depression and when the neighbors found out about my illness they acted very badly and we were forced to emigrate to Tehran. Thanks to God a few days after we came to Tehran I got acquainted through a friend of mine with Ehya NGO and then I started to attend their group therapy classes. Gradually, I could find myself again and I felt that I am a victim of AIDS and do not have any other sin. I gained a lot of knowledge about the ways of HIV transmission and the prevention methods. That helped me, to get along with my disease and learned how to live a normal life with HIV. After 5 months of going to Ehya NGO classes I gained a lot of confidence and I started going to different seminars telling people that a woman with AIDS has a right to life and progress. I feel responsible to educate the people about HIV transmission and prevention so that they do not get caught up with this unwanted disease.
I am an economical powerful woman My name is Azam. I am 33 years old and one of the health supporting mothers (HIV+) in Ehya group. I have two children. I have taken this disease from my injecting addicted husband because of my non-awareness. I have joined this group for three years, resulting in significant psychological, economic and social improvement in my life. Considering the things that I have learned from the group consultants, now with more knowledge and awareness and as a HIV trainer, I teach awareness and prevention ways and how to react to this illness to those whom are not affected by this illness especially young adults who are more in danger. As a volunteer, I am going along with some members of Ehya group to take part in informative meetings in different universities, education centers and factories to show myself to them as a HIV affected person who has a high life expectancy. Also, I have participated in job creation classes of Ehya group and learned tailoring. With the financial support of Ehya group, I was able to buy two sewing machines to sew and sell clothes in my own house. In this way, I have become a financial source to my family. They are more comfortable than before.
I am an economical powerful women My name is Samieh. I am 29 years old with two children and one of the health supporting mothers (HIV+) in Ehya group. I have participated in the group therapy of Ehya for three years and I am very happy for this matter. I have taken this disease from my addicted husband which had tattooing in prison and this was the reason that I got divorced from him. At first, when I had known my illness, I was in a very bad condition and most of all I was anxious about my two children. I hadn’t any hope for my future and had attempted suicide several times, till I had been introduced to Ehya group by one of my friends. When I saw other women that have the same condition and they are continuing their life with very good motivation, my pessimistic outlook towards prospects of my life was corrected. I have participated in the group therapy sessions regularly and become familiar with the care, prevention and conduction ways of HIV. In this way, I have found a reason to live. Now I am fully ready to educate and inform people about HIV AIDS disease. Most of the time I go along with some members of Ehya group to take part in informative meetings in different universities, education centers and factories. Also, I have participated in job creation classes of Ehya group. I have learned tailoring, therefore I was able to work in my home and take orders from some clothing manufacturers. With the advice and guidance, given by Ehya group, I have been able to marry with a healthy man and tell him about my illness from the first. Now together with my husband and two children, I have become a financial source for my family.
